BLUE HOUSE
YEAR: 2020-2021
LOCATION: NEW YORK, USA
TYPE: INTERIOR RENOVATION
The interior renovation of a dining and living room uses three new distinctive elements to organize the open plan and create intimate spaces for small gatherings while maintaining the overall openness. A new wood screen wall, fireplace, and window seat are each carefully sized and placed to define different areas within the large vaulted room.
The existing disjointed stair and railings were replaced with a new stair and unifying wood screen wall. The new horizontal slat screen links the stair going down to basement with the stair going up to the office loft and two full height screen walls provide an elegant central element for the open space while providing railings for the loft stair. The two shorter perpendicular screens are railing for the basement stair and for the loft floor edge. The screen filters sunlight throughout the day, mimicking the tree in the surrounding forest.
A new wood burning fireplace is the central focal of the living room, playing off the full height of the adjacent stair screen. The cozy window seat, with storage drawers, provides a relaxing spot to enjoy the surrounding forest views and serves as daybed for afternoon naps or overnight guests. The existing fake beams and wall trim were replaced with a poplar wood plank ceiling with new lights and ceiling fans. The dark wood of the screen walls are accented from the light wood of the existing refinished ash floor and the new ceiling.
